INTRODUCTION 70s & THE SEX |
|
The
70s were an incredibly innovative and stimulating
decade that brought us Bruce Lee and blaxploitation, Mark Spitz and Jackie
Stewart, Rayban specs and bell bottoms, disco music and glam rock, the
Lamborghini Countach and the Fiat 124 Special, "the Exorcist"
and "Deep Throat", John Holmes and Georgina Spelvin...just to
name a few... |

THE SCENE |
| In Italy this form of creative freedom soon clashed with dominant moral codes. Comics, which had been rigidly censored for years, suddenly became an arena for new adult publishers who were ready to fight for their creations. A furious battle of prosecutions, indictments, seizures and trials ensued, involving publishers, printers and even the writers or artists of these so-called "dirty comix". Thankfully legal action was not enough to close the floodgates on this phenomenon. If censors were a problem, sales were definitely not! Every time a story went on sale (sometimes even as often as once a week) , thousands of copies were sold over night. So what was the reason for their success? An original blend of intriguing plots, weird characters, a heavy dose of sex and violence, low prices and last but not least, a stunningly beautiful cover! |

THE COVERS |
| Yes, to embellish the comic book covers of titles like ZORA, WALLESTEIN, SCIACALLO and PLAYCOLT the best artists of the time were summoned. Painters and illustrators such as Biffignandi, Iaia, Tacconi, D'Angelico, all trained at Cinecittą, a demanding school, world famous for its realistic movie poster style, now set their hands to cover art. For the first time ever "classical" style married sex and violence, outrage and scandal. The result was a remarkable and explosive union that never failed to catch the imagination and eye of the public. 70s Italian Pulp Art was born! |
